This blog is named “Full of Bees” for three reasons:

  • a sideways homage to a favorite teacher, who first coined the phrase
  • an inside joke to my friends
  • a not-very-good metaphor

I won’t explain the first two reasons, and the third reason is pretty dumb – basically, if something is full of bees, it’s chaotic and alarming and beautiful and constructive, full of honey but also full of stingers – and isn’t that just like being a teacher, in a way?

The fourth, unwritten reason, is that I needed a name for a blog that hadn’t already been used, and this was all that came to mind – probably because I was having a very “full of bees” day that day. 🙂

Weird. I thought I had coined this phrase referring to something that seemed totally awesome but was hiding danger. Like when you were a kid and ran joyfully at a tire swing, but once you touched it, bees started spewing forth and all was shattered.

Oh, and I too graduated in ’04, took a weird route, and ended up in a teaching program (though a year earlier than you did). Weird, since I was drawn in by your site name through a random search for the graph of first-year disillusionment. Hope teaching is going well.
