Thoughts on Education

I have been saying this – particularly the part about education being based on an industrial model – since I was in high school. No exaggeration.

And I’m in education myself now, and every month or so I begin thinking about this stuff again, and I wonder if I can be a part of a necessary change… or if I’m the worst sort of hypocrite. Because, sometimes, f’real, I’m very much the teacher from 4:52.

This video is worth the twelve minutes it takes to watch it, if only to appreciate the art. The ideas are pretty interesting, too.

I agree, very interesting! I wish people like him could MAKE the changes/reform (whatever word people prefer). The other issue he didn’t get into is the political influence on schools. In order to run for school board, you need to have the money to support a campaign. Do teachers have these? Likely not. So instead, business people with lots of money but no practical or pedagogical experience sit in judgment of schools, making demands and policies.

That said about being a teacher as 4:52…granted, we should strive not to be that teacher. But honestly, some days or lessons are just not terribly wonderful, for whatever reason. If that is who we are as teachers all the time, yes it’s a problem. But I guess sometimes my fear from progressive educator theorists is that it begins to sound like they want me to be an entertainer, some kind of dog & pony show, and I’m not that, either.

But oh man if we could get people to really truly believe some of the ideas he presents, imagine what it could be!

The Bee’s Knees

This is the teaching journal of a student first-year second-year THIRD-YEAR (!!!) English teacher. I am writing this blog as a reflection for myself, a way to keep friends and family updated, and a sharing-ground between other educators online. I love comments!

I am striving to maintain anonymity on this blog so that I may more freely interact with my fellow edubloggers. If you know who I am, please help me protect my anonymity in your comments. I use pseudonyms or initials for everyone I write about to preserve their anonymity as well.
